At Bankers Fidelity, we take pride in our comprehensive coverage plans and variety of options to fit virtually any family’s lifestyle and budget. While every individual family member is certainly as important to us as the next, there’s one that deserves a little well-earned attention at this time: Dear old dad.

With Father’s Day right around the corner, what better time to talk about the health and well-being of the family patriarch? Besides, stereotypically speaking, most fathers are traditionally the biggest avoiders when it comes to talking about their health and seeking treatment. Perhaps remnants of the old stigma of being the “provider.” In fact, women are 33% more likely than men to visit a doctor in general, according to one 2001 report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Regardless, men are are actually inherently more at-risk for many different health conditions that can be fatal. According to the Men’s Health Network (MHN), men have higher rates of death when it comes to the overall top 10 causes of death compared to their female counterparts. These conditions include: heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, accidents, pneumonia and influenza, diabetes, suicide, kidney disease, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis.

As most people probably already know, these risk factors help to contribute to men’s statistically lower average lifespan than women too. Recent estimates have put the average life expectancy for a American men at 76 years, while women living in the U.S. average about five years older at 81.

There are so many wonderful aspects of being a father: teaching a child how to ride a bike, taking them fishing, helping them with school work, supporting (and pampering) their wives, and overall helping the family function as a conducive unit. Of course, you can’t do any of that when you’re sick, dying, or otherwise impaired. That’s why investing in life insurance policies is so crucial and should be taken care of long before you ever anticipate you’ll actually need it.

Whether you’re looking for traditional life insurance or a medicare supplement insurance policy, Bankers Fidelity has the products and services you need to ensure your family is taken care of in the unfortunate event of a father’s passing. Father’s Day might not seem like the best time to think about the morbid reality of dad’s life, but it should be a day to highlight and appreciate all that he does for you and your family. Now think about what would happen if he was gone tomorrow.

Dads can be stubborn so this Father’s Day make it a point to not only do something nice for pops, but also kindly remind him to take care of that bothersome ailment he’s been pretending doesn’t affect him, or get that questionable skin abnormality looked at. At the end of the day, while it may be his life, there are numerous people that love, rely, and depend on him every day. It’s never a bad thing to remind him of that.
